No, absolutely not. Washing your hair every day or very frequently will not cause hair loss.
In this article:
From a Trichologist’s point of view, daily washing hair is most beneficial for the health of your scalp to create the very best environment for hair growth. In a healthy, human scalp hair should grow on average 1.5cm per month. The argument to support daily washing is that we produce bacteria and yeast on our bodies every day and would not question “stripping the feet skin (for example) of natural oils” therefore the scalp needs the same care.
See below a photo of the scalp just 24 hours after washing, this patient does not have a scalp condition, but you can see the amount of scalp debris on here. Our hair will pick up fumes and pollutants wherever we go.
Unsuitable Hair Products
However, if the products used for washing your hair are not suitable for your hair type, it can lead to detrimental consequences. Many perceive their hair to be dry for example if they have highlights, making the hair feel more porous or that their scalp itches. This may result in someone with fine or medium texture hair using a heavy oil-based product which can, in the case of different molecules of synthetic proteins in shampoos actually cause a buildup and with heat used to style often break the hair.
The factors that affect the speed of hair growth are:
- a balanced diet rich in protein and iron, particularly for menstruating women with female hair loss. Adequate levels of B12, Zinc, iron store, vitamin D. These levels are often tested within a consultation at Sussex Trichology.
- Care of the hair varies slightly within different ethnic groups. If for example Brazilian Blow dries or chemical straightening treatments are now conditioned adequately, this could break the hair leading to what can present like slow growing hair. Often during the consultation, Shuna has had to explain that it grows perfectly, but for can be damaged due to factors such as colouring, heat, weather exposure, lack of conditioning.
- The hair follicle interestingly in every ethnic group is identical, the structure and shape of the hair shaft differ in being: Caucasian- oval, oriental- round, afro-flattened and ribbons like hence its beautiful curls.
At Sussex Trichology, Shuna Hammocks is able to decipher whether you are suffering from conditions commonly known as male hair loss or female hair loss. There may be a nutritional reason, stress-related cause or even a hair loss of an autoimmune origin.
There are cases where weathering and external factors may be the reason too. A diagnosis of your condition would be achieved during the consultation and our Trichologist who is a member of the Institute of Trichologists will guide you through your treatment options.
