Problems with your hair may include hair loss, female pattern thinning, flaky or oily scalp, or out of condition hair, in need of some loving care and guidance to help it look its best again. But what you may not realise is that the solution to these problems may be as simple as seeing a trichologist.

So what is Trichology? Who is a Trichologist?

Trichology is the study of the hair and scalp, in both health and disease and a trichologist should be your first port of call if you have a problem with your hair. However, when choosing your trichologist, it is important to check that they are properly qualified and if possible a member of the Institute of Trichologists too.

What happens during a consultation and how a Trichologist treat hair

As a qualified and experienced trichologist, I will spend up to an hour with you in your first consultation in my relaxing salon. I’ll ask you about your general health, medication taken, diet, lifestyle and stress levels, as well as your hair care routine.

It’s really important to have a thorough examination of your hair and scalp in order to give an accurate diagnosis of what’s wrong. But I know and understand how distressing hair loss can be so I do everything I can to make sure you feel comfortable and are able to be frank with me. Our meetings are confidential and I promise to be completely honest about what I can and can’t achieve in treatment.

After your consultation, you’ll start your treatment and this is done at my clinic. But I’ll also make sure you have clear instructions about what to do when you are at home.

Finally if it appears that you may need a blood test, this can either be carried out via your own GP (your consultation includes any requests or referral letters), or if more convenient, by our in house private GP in The Clinic here. The sample is then sent to the laboratory for analysis and results can usually be supplied within a few days, by email if required.

What should you do next?

If this article has struck a chord with you, or if you know of a family member or close friend who is quietly struggling with a hair problem, please get in touch with me. It is far better to discuss the situation with someone who has years of experience than spend an awful lot of time and money on “miracle cures” or worry so much you make the condition worse.

  • Ms Kathleen G says:

Hi there. I have a 13 year old grandson who was diagnosed with alopecia areata over 2 years began witha total loss of his eyebrows then patches of hair on the back of his head. He now has hair only on the top of his head as the sides are also showing larger bald patches. He has virtually no hair on his arms or legs either. At this age he is finding his condition extremely difficult to handle. He was initially given steroid foam to spray on his head then light treatment and more recently injections into his scalp.None of these have made much difference. We are now considering paying for hair weave/ partial real hair piece treatment. He has never been given blood tests to determine a cause, however we are convinced it is related to auto_immune disease as he has suffered from severe bowel problems since he was a baby. Any advice would be helpful!

Can you tell me please what blood tests are actually done?

    Many thanks
