My name is Kelly McMahon and I am a Trichotherapist at Sussex Trichology in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

Having recently found out that I am expecting my second child in March 2015 I thought it perfect timing to write a blog on hair loss after pregnancy (also known as Post-Partum hair loss).

After the birth of my first child, I noticed that my hair was beginning to fall out. I was not initially worried as I knew to expect some hair loss after pregnancy. Post-partum hair loss is very common after giving birth. Since working with Shuna Hammocks, I now understand that hair loss after pregnancy is due to the hormone levels changing after birth.

In most cases the hormone levels in a woman’s body will correct and balance themselves out within the first few months after birth; however, after nine months my hair was still falling out at an incredible rate and this was when I started to feel worried. I was finding lots of hair in the brush, on the floor, on my pillow and after a shower. It seemed never ending! Shuna had advised me that any considerable hair loss after 9 months of giving birth was something that may need to be investigated further with a possible blood test.

I booked myself an appointment for a blood test, and when I received the results it became clear as to why I was experiencing so much hair loss. I was extremely low in iron, caused by the huge hormonal change my body had been through during pregnancy. I was also found to be deficient in other areas; zinc and vitamin D. Shuna gave me the tools to be able to move forward and I am now happy that my hair has regrown fully.

If you are suffering from the same type of hair loss, please come and see us at Sussex Trichology. I was lucky that I was able to speak to Shuna who expertly advised me; otherwise, I could have carried on losing hair for months. Hair loss after pregnancy can be alarming, but you don’t need to just accept it. Things can be done to slow and eventually stop this loss.

You can now read the 2nd part of the blog.
